You guys are going to get sick of me posting pictures of my new arrivals, but here they are anyway.  They're 20 days old and growing pretty quick.  Even though I didn't capture it in the pictures, they're really feathering out.  I've been gradually exposing them for short periods of time to the other 4 hens we have and Gertie is really protective and bosses the other hens around when they are around the little ones.  But she's always been at the top of the pecking order, mostly because she is the mother of the 4 grown hens.  The chicks don't seem the least bit timid around the hens.  The chicks, Gertie and the other hens all sleep in the same hen house and even though Gertie and the chicks retreat at night to the cage I still have in there for them, they are all out and about when I go in to let just the hens out for the day at 6:30 in the morning.  I still am hesistant to let them out into the run area because I'm afraid that darn cat (Pretty Puss) will get them.  I liken our run area to Ft. Knox in that it has double fencing on the lower portion and a net over the top of the run area, but I still don't trust that cat to not get in there somehow and make a meal of one of my babies.  Still gonna wait another few weeks before I let them out with the rest during the day.

Bruce and I noticed that one of the chicks likes to poke it's head out between Gertie's wing and her body when it's seeking refuge under her for safety.  It's scared, nosy and curious all the same time!  It's about the cutest thing I've ever seen.  I will try to get some pictures of that this evening, if it will cooperate.

Gertie always loses so much weight while she's setting on eggs and this time was no exception.  I bet she weighs half as much as the other hens.  She's hungry everytime I go in there and I see that she gets as much as she will take, although she's usually more concerned about her babies getting food first than herself.  I guess I will start weighing her to make sure she's putting some of the weight back on over time.

Anyway, without much further ado here are the pictures:

They are so cute! So is Gertie!! My cat does fine with the chicks. He has walked to close to new chicks before and found how severe the wrath of the mother can really be!! LOL He is a strange cat though. He thinks he is a chicken and appears to be very low in the pecking order!
