I have one or two of my hens (Barred Rocks) that are acting a little broody. By that i mean they seem to always want to be in their roosts babysiting some eggs. I will occasionally have to shoo one out to collect the eggs. My "chicken background"....3-4 years ago when i decided i wanted chickens (for eggs to eat) i bought hens that were already laying. Kept that first group for 2-3 yrs, replacing as necessary when i would lose one. Decided last spring to get day old chicks shipped & raise them to egg producing age. So....my big question ; if i pull one or 2 (so the mamma doesnt get lonely) of the broody hens from the flock to allow them to hatch out the eggs, is this a TOUGH endeavor without an incubator? Will a hen only sit on/hatch HER own eggs? If im able to successfuly help these ladies to have chickies hatch, how likely are they to be accepted back into the flock?? I know there will be some ammount of picking & pecking when they are reintroduced. Thanks again!! Dawn

That is a good question Piglett. If so then you should be ok pulling a couple out to let them sit. Alot of times it better to let mother nature do the work. A hen is the best incubator you can get. Also they don't have to be her own.

Is there any way you can set the girls up to brood in the coop with the others? I have found it works best for me to set them up in a cage or crate in the coop with the others but not allowing the others to lay new eggs in the nest with the broody. The introductions go much better when mom is ready to leave the nest with the chicks. They never really left the flock so the non-broody girls still know them. Don't be surprised though when mom does come off the nest with the chicks if she whoops the first butt she sees. It is their way of letting everyone know not to mess with her babies! LOL They really are the best incubators!
