They probably don't need it yet. At least the 2 week olds. You can give them a little hard boiled egg. Make sure you mash it up real good.

well i'll tell you what i'll did with mine

after having a bunch of trouble will my 1st batch of chicks having sticky butt (often)

i started from day 1 with my 2nd batch adding a Small amount of grit rite in with the

starter feed. i only had to deal with sticky butts for a day or 2 & then never had any sign of it at all.

both batches came from the same farm & were hatched out by the same person

so i myself figured it must have had something to do with the pinch of grit here & there i added (but i could be wrong)

anyhow mine still don't know what to do when i give them grass & some are 7 weeks old already.

i will be finishing their small temp. fenced in area tomorrow 10' x 11'

so maybe once they get a little outside time each day they will start to get the hang of it.

I believe starter feed has grit in it. Therefore you do not have to give them grit. I have NEVER had to give my starter peeps grit. Once they were free ranging or getting layer feed, then, I give them grit.

One way to avoid Pasty  Butt is to sprinkle dry oatmeal (not instant) on their starter feed. NOT a whole lot...just a fine layer over the top will do fine.

I found this last tip by accident. When I got guinea fowl keets I read up on them and found out that oatmeal helps keets with any digestive issues they might have. some Barred Rock peeps were included in the GFK shipment (to keep them warm on the trip and teach them to eat and drink water...keets are not as smart as peeps). I fed them the oatmeal on top of the starter feed and NO one got PB. Not even the peeps.

Ever since then, I have been giving oatmeal to all peeps and I have not had to deal with PB.

Best of luck-

Pedro

PS Also, I find that if you put a little bit of sugar in the water helps give them an added pep. Not a lot and just for the first week or two.
Ratio is a tsp sugar to a gallon of water.
