REALLY?  She did it again.  We've been coming up 1 short in the night time countdown and I thought "DAMN.  We've lost one."  I've had brahmas for years and they've gone broody, for like a week and then they give up.

Now I've had one chicken (I think its the same one) do it twice.  In a season. What the heck?

Thats right, she came out with TWO chicks again.  I felt horrible but we had to take them from her again.  The snakes are thick this year and I don't have a snake proof pen.  The big chickens are pretty much safe from them but we've seen them go under a mother eat the eggs.  I'm sure they'd do the same with live chicks.  They might have done that all along and thats why there are only two live chicks?

Its weird that each time I get a surprise hatching, its two babies.  One time I had been incubating some duck eggs.   A week (or so) past the hatching date, I gave up.  Turned off everything, dropped the cover on the incubator and ignored it.  I can't remember if I turned off the incubator itself or just the turner?  I swear the heat was off but a few days later... PEEP PEEP.  Two baby ducks in a bone dry incubator.  They looked horrible.  Mucky & brown.  Dried muck.  The discoloration took until they grew in their feathers to go away.  They didn't look like pekins ever.

So thats my good news this month!

i wish I could share pics here. They're so danged cute. I'm still raising my bantams in the house. The brahma babies wouldn't stop crying so I grabbed the smallest banty and put it in there with them. Instant silence!!

The three of them are huddled together under the lamp and its so danged precious it melts your heart!

When I lived in Arkansas we had lots of copperheads and an old lady at the farmmill told me to use sulpher all around my coop and around the inside and perimeter. I did faithfully with a really heavy band all around the outside and on the inside around the perimeter and around the nesting boxes. She said that a snake would not cross it because it burns their skin and it worked really well, never had a snake around the coop and the way I know it worked was because one day I was putting it around our deck after doing the coop and I saw a 4 foot black snake going towards the run with my chicks in it so with my sulfur bucket still in my hand I threw about a cup worth on him and I swear he made this horrible noise and he took off so fast in a different direction and so fast I did not see where he went , but we found him dead far away from the coop a few days later and his skin was really burned from the sulfur . So I know it works and well too. It never hurt my chickens either and I used a lot of it and you can get it in 50 pound bags. The only downside is you have to redo it if rains and the sulfur washes away but I used it in my coop and never had a problem and only had to do it every so often.

You  should be  able  to get this at  any  farm store  and we  used to keep in 5 gallon buckets with lids  and  it  kept  forever  but  you must  keep it dry .  And  I never  noticed  an odor .

That's real good info Country Hen... specially since I just found 3 rather large gardersnakes under a wood pile in my yard near the coop.. .YIKES!   I have sooo many broodies right now though and they get pretty darn protective of their nests when they are in the mood... lol
